The meaning of Jyoti
The name of my website was inspired by my studies of the Yoga Sūtra (YS).
Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtra is an ancient text on yoga philosophy and it explains the goal of yoga. This goal is to transform the mind from its usual distracted state to a steady and peaceful state, able to focus on one object or activity without distraction.
According to sutra, this is a ‘sattvic’ mind, one of clarity and understanding.
Jyoti can be translated as ‘light’ and when its used to describe the light of a sattvic mind (YS ch1v36) it’s not just optical light but an inner light.
Imagine the mind as an ocean which is perfectly still without even a ripple. This is a sattvic mind, said to reflect inner light.
